Breaking out cases by type of abuse, the data show that sexual abuse rate was essentially unchanged from 2015 to 2016 to a nationally estimated 58,700 cases. Physical abuse increased 5% to an estimated 125,000 cases. Neglect declined 1% to an estimated 541,000 cases.
